Match report Despite having lost our last three league games, we went into this match still in third place. By the end of it we were sixth and looking at the other end of the table. Looking short of form and confidence, this was another poor performance. There was some mitigation. There were two lengthy rain interruptions. The outfield was wet and slowed the ball down and one of the umpires upset three of the visiting batsmen.
Ben won the toss and chose to bat first on a dry surface which took a good deal of spin. Monty McKenzie was the main benefactor with his off breaks, after Gradwell’s gentle medium pace had claimed three wickets. The highest visiting partnership was 28 for the second wicket. Dean top scored, but ran out of partners.
The rain interruptions caused a change in Fair Oak’s target to 98 from 40 overs; hardly a daunting prospect. Ben and Ewen reduced them to 68 for 4, but that meant the arrival of notorious six-hitter Gregor McKenzie who made the winning hit with a maximum.
