Match report Newly relegated Andover were an unknown quantity and they proved to be a handful with some potent players. The start, after the visitors had won the toss, was not untypical. The first wicket fell to Jake in the seventh over with 23 on the board. Max took the second in the 13th over to make the score 41 for 2 with both openers gone.
The home side were then introduced to Babu Veetil. He made a big impression. He showed no mercy or respect to Max and the two spinners. When he was out the score stood at 124 for 5 and the longest partnership of 42 had just been broken by Jono. Smith was out two runs later, but the last four wickets, well marshalled by Hooper added 83 valuable runs.
It was no surprise that Veetil bowled as well, at a sharp pace. By the time 11 overs had been bowled, the home innings was wrecked. At 28 for six, the game was up. Veetil had taken 4 for 12 and left armed Jansen 2 for 11. Perhaps the club’s worst start to a Southern League innings ? What was unusual was that as in the Andover innings, the tail wagged vigorously and added 88 runs. Tom Wheeler found his feet with a maiden half century at Southern League level, strewn with boundaries. When he was dismissed, theteam were just eight runs short of a batting point.
Fortunately, full bowling points (5) had been secured earlier.
