St Cross Symondians CC 2's v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 31 Aug 2024 at 12:00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Much to our surprise, St Cross asked the visitors to bat first on what looked like a firm surface full of runs. The overcast conditions lasted for the whole day and not surprisingly, the new ball swung in both innings, resulting in a lot of playing and missing.
P & S got off to a decent start, 41 on the board when Matt was out in the. Ninth over. Felix suffered the same fete shortly after at 49 for two. There followed the highest and best stand of the innings. Ned and Jack added 64 in 14 overs. Jack and Usman added a further 33 before Jack was caught. This triggered a collapse with four wickets falling for 20 runs in nine overs.
St Cross were now in the ascendancy which was only challenged when Max joined Jake at 177 for 8. They put on 38 in six overs in a reprise of their match winning performance at New Milton, both made with Dennis Batchelor umpiring. This gave P & S some hope of victory.
Lewis was bowled by Jake in the fifth over with 23 scored. Little did we know that this was the high point of the innings from a P & S point of view. Well supported by Overy, Harry Trussler’s aggressive, boundary-strewn century ensured that a home win was certain a long time before he was dismissed in the 34th over with only four runs needed.
St Cross were already assured of relegation to Division 3, but there was no doubt that they deserved this victory. Langley Manor started the day in second place, but were thrashed by Hambledon, securing just 2 batting points from the match.
However, Fair Oak’s win at New Milton catapulted them into second by a narrow margin and thus promotion to Division One. Hambledon of course had already clinched promotion back to the division they left in 2023, suggesting that the gulf between the 2nd and 1st divisions is similar to the Gulf of Mexico.
It should be remembered that 3rd in Division Two of the Southern League is the highest place our first team have ever reached. That should be a source of some satisfaction.
