Match report This match answered two important questions: could the team win batting first; and could they win without a major contribution from Jack. Both were answered in the affirmative. Portsmouth & Southsea remain the only unbeaten team in Division 3 with Paultons losing to Gosport.
Ben won the toss and chose batting first on a used pitch with plenty of grass to encourage the bowlers. South Wilts are known not to relish chasing a total. Matt and Shaun opened with 42 in 12 overs before Shaun was caught behind off promising young spinner Lewis. Four runs later Chris departed in the same fashion and at 67 Jack was caught at mid on much to the delight of the home side.
Four runs later, Lewis had Matt caught at slip. He hit three lovely boundaries in his watchful knock. Alex and Tom were both on nought when their partnership began, but they added 28 in nine overs before they were both dismissed with the total on 99 from 30 overs. Max and Ben added 23 in nine overs before the captain was bowled.
The value of batting long was shown as Max and Dean put on 31 in six overs. Max was caught at 153 and Jake went at 167 with 17 balls remaining. Keiron was run out attempting a second run, but 170 looked a competitive total.
The first setback in the home team’s reply came at 7 when former first teamer Cranch was caught by Jack, diving at mid wicket. Smith was pinned in front on 19 and 170 looked a long way off at this point. There followed partnerships of 17 and 15 with Hussey and Rob Pittman the dismissed batsmen. Steve Pittman then joined the dogged Brown at 51 and things started to look more encouraging for South Wilts, but when the score reached 80, Brown was leg before to Jake and Pittman was caught on the mid wicket boundary off Ben. The game was up for the home team. Ben and Max took six overs to vanquish the tail, a cover drive from Brewer and a six from Partridge being the only signs of defiance.
