Match report The final game of this mini-season was an entertaining experience for the spectators but an ordeal for the bowlers. In the 39.3 overs, 349 runs were scored at a rate of 8.83 per over. The stand-out bowler was Jono, but he finished on the losing side.
This was the second successive year that P & S had reached the final of the Southern League Plate, having lost to Hampshire Academy at the Ageas Bowl last season and at the half way stage, they had every reason to be confident with 172 runs on the board. This total included a partnership of 125 between Jack and Ollie. Jack dominated proceedings as he had at Rowledge, but Ollie gave excellent support and made sure that Jack got enough of the strike. Roles were reversed when Dean was promoted to number 4. He did exactly what was required in the last over, powering four deliveries to the boundary.
Requiring nine runs an over, Fair Oak came out all guns blazing, but lost both openers in the first ten balls. Hughes struggled to score quickly, but it was soon clear that Gwynne had a wide range of scoring areas and was a potential match winner. Hughes and Stewart fell in quick succession to make the score 65 for four in the ninth over when Oxley joined Gwynne. They added 56 in six overs before Jono bowled Gwynne.
Bullough made sure that there was no respite for the bowlers and 25 in two and a half overs followed before Oxley’s violent innings ended, Jack waiting a long time to catch the skier. With three overs to go, Fair Oak needed 27 to win. Bullough and Reed showed no nerves in finishing the task with three balls to spare, the last two balls going for sixes.
