Match report Steve won the toss and chose to bat first, much to the delight of his teammates on this hot, sweat-inducing day. Alas, both openers were gone with only 20 on the board, neither to good deliveries. Echoes of the first team then followed with Jack and Sayeed adding 115 for the third wicket, putting the home team in control. Jack scored 52 in boundaries while Sayeed provided the necessary support. Ian and Sayeed furthered the total by 30 before an explosive cameo from Dean took the score on to 213 for 5. Sayeed’s departure after nearly two hours meant the decline of the batting side’s superiority, but Umar’s sensible approach made sure 250 was achieved.
When Hayling batted, Muhammad’s accuracy soon reduced them to 26 for four, at which point he was on a hat trick, but like Chris against Purbrook last week, it didn’t happen. What looked like being a rout was avoided by Gary Martin’s excellent half century. With good support from Parsons, 62 were added for the fifth wicket. Martin was eventually dismissed at 139 for seven and although Chaplin batted well, the end was nigh, Mani and Manny taking four wickets between them from the south end of the ground.
However, the memory all those present will take from the game was that of Shaun’s stunning catch to dismiss Gillam. He pulled a long hop from Jack to deep mid wicket. It looked like being a one bounce four, but Shaun dived full length and held the ball with his left hand, inches from the sun-baked ground. Instant applause followed from everyone in the ground except the crest-fallen Gillam.
