Match report A night that started with the challenge of knowing we were going in a man light seem to galvanize the troops. Ultimately, as it transpired, being a bat short rather played into our hands.
Winning the toss skipper Freddie and opening partner Tristan set their stalls out early - both gunning for the back wall from ball one. 3 6's saw Freddie the first to retire but Tristan wasn't too far behind hitting 3 consecutive 4s and a six to follow him. Unfortunately Davo, Umar and Cam only managed 2 runs between them but taking up only about 6 balls to get there (and our not having a number 6) meant the openers were soon back at it. They simply took up where they left off. With Tristan favouring hitting 4s and Freddie 6s the board rattled round as they both sailed past half centuries. As we started the last over Tristan was leading but he didn't get another hit. Freddie took the first 3 balls for 18 and while the ton was out of reach he might have improved on the 16s leagues best ever (our very own Tom Benfield's mark of 97). It wasn't to be but he got us over the 200 to set a very testing target, even against a 5 man field.
The ultra aggressive hitting simply didn't let our young Hambledon opponents settle but they stuck to their guns well and on another will have far more to show for it. However, the significant target perhaps effected their approach to batting a little. We bowled tightly and limited their urgency although wickets proved hard to come by. In the end we finished only halfway through their card but 130+ runs to the good.
So we go into the Christmas break unbeaten. Similar performances in the new year will be very welcome. Happy Christmas to all our readers.
