Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 11 v Purbrook on Sun 03 Jun 2018 at 9.30am
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs

Match report Such a close game today, could have gone either way on the last ball!!

We won the toss and opted to bat first as knew they would be a stronger side than we've played so far this season and wanted to be able to use the fact we are a strong bowling side to hopefully win the game.

Ryan N and Tristan opened and with Ryan hitting four 4s we ended the first 4 overs on 43 for 0. Next pair Sid and Sam batted well but unfortunately faced a series of wides and no balls, Sid was rewarded on the last ball of their 4 overs with a great 4.

Roman and Thomas were in next, they were a little hesitant on their calling/running but both coped well against 2 good bowlers throughout their overs and there was a controversial decision (assisted by the opposition's parents) where Thomas possibly hit a 4 on his debut due to the fielder crossing the boundary before knocking the ball sage, Thomas was only rewarded with a single in spite of a brilliant hit. P&S U11s did comment as they left the field after the innings that they'd better not lose by 3 runs and they'd blame Ben if they did, fortunately Ben did not looked too scared about this!

Will and Ryan H were in next and both hit some brilliant singles plus Ryan hit his 2nd 4 in a row to achieve his highest runs score of the season.

Elliott and Jacob were in last and before going out there realised that unlike any of the previous teams we faced, Purbrook had 2 extremely good bowlers they had to face for all their overs. They got off to a flying start with Elliott hitting 5 off his first 2 balls, they then hit 3 more singles off the next 4 balls for the highest score off the bat in an over all game. The next over was facing Purbrook's fastest bowler so whilst scoring was low (another dubious decision for a 4 for Elliott where the fielder crossed the line again but they ran a great 2 instead). They hit some great 2s and singles in the next 7 balls but then lost wickets in the last over due to some outstanding bowling from Purbrook's bowler of the day (4 wickets for just 8 runs in his 3 overs).

Due to us losing 9 wickets, Purbrook started on 45 runs so it looked like it could be a difficult job today. Elliott, Ryan N, Sid and Ryan H started brilliantly, only 13 runs in 4 overs plus a few byes and wickets for Ryan N and Sid meant Purbrook were less than 10 ahead at the same point in their innings even with their huge head start. The next wicket came from Jacob assisted by a catch from Ryan N plus another wicket for Jacob in the 12th over. By the end of the 3rd batting pair we were 32 runs down at the same stage of the previous innings however we had now added 20 runs to our batting score so still keeping within a close distance.

The more experienced fielders Ryan N and Elliott showed some impressive backing up and communication throughout the game to keep the runs scored low plus Ryan almost took an amazing diving catch off Will's bowling, somewhat reminiscent of the 'catch' that lost the 1sts the game against Hambledon yesterday but in true P&S style Ryan was straight up to say it touched the ground so well done Ryan, great sportsmanship! There was another close call when Elliott came powering in to try to reach a high ball and got a hand to it but couldn't quite hold on.

In the 16th over Ryan N showed huge determination and took 2 wickets in his 1st 2 balls but Purbrook only needed 12 to win off the last 4 overs and we knew they would have a strong batting pair (including their star bowler) to come. Sid bowled 1st giving away just 2 singles, Tristan in next bowled very well, 4 dot balls plus 2 wides, Elliott kept it to just 1 run scored by their strongest batsman meant they still needed 5 to win. Ryan N who had already taken 3 wickets bowled the last over, his 1st ball went for 4 with an impressive strike then he held the batsman to 2 dot balls. It was now a draw so maybe we could still get something from the game. Jacob made a brilliant stop from the next strike and unfortunately the ball was missed by the keeper and fielder to go for 2 runs leaving their strongest batsman on strike. Purbrook were now 2 ahead so it was all down to that last ball, a wicket would have meant we would win the game but unfortunately it was not to be today and Purbrook took a quick single to end on 152 - 6 against our 149-9.

Special mentions today need to go to Ryan Nay for 21 runs, 3 wickets and 2 catches - amazing stuff and also Jacob for taking 2 wickets, however there were so many good parts I could probably name them all!

It was a brilliant display by everyone today, they all worked hard and played well, it was a real team effort. I know it was a disappointing loss and I know a few boys were blaming their own errors for losing the game but everyone did some brilliant batting/fielding/bowling today as well as the odd mistake and it was, as always a team effort, win or lose, and there are so many positives to take from this!
