Match report Our first experience of the new scoring system for our pairs Cricket. To explain; both sides start at Zero and earn 5 bonus runs for every opposition wicket taken.
Winning the toss Elliott offered our hosts the chance to bat and our efforts were excellent. As we might expect the experienced skipper lead from the front taking 3 wickets but he was very well supported by Ryan, Felix and Jacob who took a wicket apiece, one thanks to a tremendous catch from Felix.
All the other boys did us proud too, with special mentions to Will on his debut and to his fellow debutant Tristan who, with Roman, only went for 1 between their 4 overs! Sam and Harrison also kept the pressure on with tight lines and lengths. Tom got his feet moving well and worked hard behind the stumps. Waterlooville ended with 84 runs.
Having taken 6 wickets we began our innings with 30 runs in the bank. In face of some really good Waterlooville bowling we had our work cut out. Unfortunately no-one came away unscathed. Tom found the boundary twice - once via a classic cover drive off their quick man but with them hanging on to cracking catches and making direct hit runouts as well as bowling us their score grew almost as steadily as ours.
We managed to get to 80 runs (only 4 less than they managed) but our losing the extra wickets put clear blue water between our ultimate scores.
All that said I was really pleased with our inexperienced teams game play. With a bit more work and experience with our running, calling and defensive play we will soon be able to come away victorious from future matches.
A good start folks and some useful pointers for games to come.
