LION HEARTED PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA 3RD’S BATTLE THROUGH TO VICTORY

We won the toss and elected to bat first on another glorious summer’s day. We made a steady start and kicked on with a typically aggressive knock from Manny who departed after the drinks break for 43. Mohit who made 25 and Reuben with 26 both made solid contributions to set us on a path towards 200 runs. Harrison made a crucial 44 coming in at 7 and the tail ensured that we got maximum batting points by closing our innings on 207 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Sarisbury were confident that they were going to comfortable chase the runs downs and it would have been hard to disagree with them with the start they made. After 8 overs they were 54-0 with Oliphant racing to 36. We had our backs against the wall and our task was made even harder when Tom took a delivery flush in the face, whilst standing up to Romit and he was taken to A & E with two suspected broken front teeth and a cut lip that required eight stitches. We all hope that Tom makes a speedy recovery and doesn’t suffer too much pain. We will miss his excellent keeping and his eccentricity.

We were down to 10 and Manny took over behind the stumps. The introduction of Harrison changed the innings completely. With only his second delivery he dismissed the dangerous Oliphant, who left an off cutter outside off stump and paid the price when it jagged back and bowled him. Harrison took another 2 wickets and with a wicket from Romit’s last over, Sarisbury were 95-4 at drinks.

Jason took over the gloves so Manny could bowl. Manny took 4 wickets to put us firmly in control and a fourth wicket from Harrison put us on the brink of victory. The last wicket added 32 runs, before Connor returned to finish the job, when Horton edged him behind to Jason. Sarisbury were all out for 180.

I am extremely proud of all the players in our team. It was a courageous performance against a very good side and we kept battling when things went against us. It would have been easy for us to drop our heads and get rolled over, especially after the injury to Tom that reduced us to 10 players for virtually the whole of the second innings.

Everyone played their part in extending our winning sequence to 6 games and to gain our fourth maximum 24 points in succession. We have another tough game this Saturday, when we travel to take on Gosport Challengers. Let’s make it a magnificent 7. Up The Mighty Threes!! Bring it on!!!
