Match report
COMPTON V PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA 3RD’S
SOUTHEAST REGIONAL DIVISION 1
14/07/18
RAMPAGING ROMIT CRUSHES COMPTON
Compton batted first on a ground that looked more like a bombsite than a cricket field. The strip was an uneven green mess and the square in contrast was a dustbowl littered with several potholes filled to the brim with gravel. It was impossible to predict how the wicket would play and we were content to bowl first despite the hot sun beating down on us.
Connor opened the bowling and instantly hit an immaculate line and length. Harrison bowled from the other end and was hoping to exploit the deck with his off cutters. The Compton openers rode their luck with a series of Chinese cuts and edges that flew infuriating out of reach of our fielders.
The bowlers kept their discipline and Romit was rewarded with the wicket of Jones in the 14th over. Jones attempted a drive on the up and Sam took a well judged catch running in from long on. The first of the Turner brothers came in at 3 and looked a very good bat. He hit the ball cleanly and anything that pierced the field flashed to the boundary on the lightning fast outfield.
Turner was the centre of huge controversy when we were convinced that he edged a delivery from Romit into Manny’s gloves. Turner stood his ground and the home umpire was most apologetic for his lack of hearing. Once the commotion had died down, Romit resumed his over. Romit obviously felt aggrieved, because the next ball was dug in just short of a length. The ball reared viciously at Turner who fended it off one handed and looped a simple catch to Harrison at square leg. Turner departed for 27 with a passing shot ringing in his ears from Jason.
Romit had his tail up and he got his third wicket when he ripped through the defence of Burt, who had faced the first ball of the innings for his resilient 15 runs. J. Turner came in at 5 and like his brother earlier looked a very dangerous batsman. He went after the bowling immediately and struck three quick boundaries to propel him to 15. He eyed another four from a delivery that Romit bowled a fraction shorter and the ball sailed high into the air towards the long on boundary. Qasir took control and raced across the dry earth as if it had been scorched by fire rather than the prolonged sun. All the time his eyes were fixed on the plummeting ball and at the very last moment he dived full length to take the catch with both hands outstretched inches above the ground. What a catch! What an athlete! What a talent!
Romit claimed two more wickets by the time he finished his spell to put us firmly in control. It was Romit’s first 5 wicket haul for the club and he bowled brilliantly. Sam and Rajesh took over the bowling duties and we continued to take our opportunities in the field. Another fine catch by Qasir, this time in cow corner saw the back of Smales, who attempted a slog sweep off Sam. Rajesh then bowled Brookway with his arm ball and Compton were sinking fast.
Sam got his second wicket when Jarvis prodded a delivery into mid-wicket, where Bergy surprised everyone by actually moving and taking a diving catch one handed inches from the ground. Sam summed up the moment when he shouted in amazement, “He’s caught it!”
The wickets continued to tumble when White chopped on a delivery from Rajesh to leave Compton on the brink at 9 down. The final pair gave Compton some hope by adding 18 runs to swell the total to 150, before Connor returned to end the innings in emphatic fashion. He was too quick for Farringdon, who could nothing to stop a sharp delivery cartwheeling his middle stump out of the ground. Connor had produced another sublime spell of bowling and he only conceded 10 runs from 6.2 overs.
Gary and Jason began our reply against the seam up attack of the Turner brothers. It was a stern test of Gary and Jason’s technique and patience to survive the opening onslaught. After 10 overs we only had 12 runs on the scoreboard, but more importantly Gary and Jason had seen off the threat of the Turner brothers.
Jarvis was the first change in the bowling and immediately the shackles were off for Jason. He plundered a 6 and 4 from Jarvis’ first over. However, Jason was furious with himself when he top edged a long hop to square leg from Jarvis’ second over. The frustration was etched all across his face as he trudged back to the pavilion for a hard fought 20.
Mohit came in at 3 and was bitterly disappointed to get out for 9 runs, when he was caught at mid-off to the off spin of Howard. Manny strode purposefully to the middle and attacked the bowling in his usual aggressive fashion. A brisk knock of 27, which included two sixes and two fours came to an abrupt end, when Manny picked out Turner sweeping on the cover boundary.
Bergy took his guard to a chorus of expletives and bangs coming from Manny in the visitors dressing room. Gary and Bergy knocked off the remaining runs and a fifth consecutive victory was in the bag. Gary scored 42 not out and carried his bat for the second week running. “The Wall” is back! We gained our third 24 points win in succession and this was our most complete performance of the season.
We are going into our biggest game of the season this Saturday against Sarisbury 3rd’s full of confidence and determined to keep the winning streak going. Well done Lads! Up The Mighty Threes!! Bring it on!!!
