HURRICANE HARRISON BLOWS IBM AWAY

We bounced back from our first defeat of the season with a comfortable six wicket victory against IBM South Hants. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat on a very green and soft track. The impressive New Palace mansion looked down majestically upon the quintessentially village ground of the home team, as Connor and Romit opened our bowling attack.

Romit got the early breakthrough with the third ball of his first over. It was a peach of a delivery that drew G. Stride into driving and continued to swing away and to take the outside edge for Tom to take the catch behind. Connor, fresh from receiving his Supporters Player of the month award for May, just before the game, carried on his fine form.

Unfortunately, he was not rewarded with any wickets on this occasion that his fine bowling deserved, but his miserly bowling only yielded 15 runs from 8 overs.

IBM were simply decimated with the introduction of Harrison and Sam. Harrison’s off cutters were biting into the soft wicket and were regularly jagging back at least a foot. Harrison struck with his very first ball with an off cutter that gated P. Stride and crashed into his stumps. He repeated the feat with his last delivery of the same over. This time Smith walked back to the pavilion equally bemused. At the end of the eventful 11th over IBM were 33-3.

Sam got his first wicket of the match with a beautifully flighted delivery that Reyer nicked behind to the ever, reliable Tom to take the catch. Harrison then produced another superb off cutter to bowl Rowson for 1 and IBM were reeling at 42-5. There was time for one more wicket to fall before the drinks break, when Sam bowled a fuller delivery that shaved the off stump of the driving Gledstone. IBM were sinking fast at 69-6.

Harrison struck with the ball of the day in the resuming over after drinks. It was yet another ripping off cutter that jagged back from outside off to amazingly clip the leg stump. An incredulous Ellis couldn’t comprehend that he was out and his initial reaction was that he must have been stumped. He trudged off in utter dis-belief, when he was told that he had been bowled. Sam struck again when he trapped Hicks lbw for a duck and IBM were in tatters at 71-8.

IBM managed to survive the remaining overs of Harrison’s and Sam’s respective spells, but the damage had been done by them both. They shared 7 wickets from 16 overs for 54 runs. Harrison returned the astonishing figures of 4-10 from his 8 overs of masterclass bowling. Sam picked up 3-42 from his first serious spell of the season.

Manny took the 9th wicket with an audacious slower ball that completely undid Barnard and bowled him for 26. Barnard had been the mainstay of the IBM innings during the carnage that had gone on around him and the innings was over the very next ball when Swales chipped a simple catch to Romit at mid off. Manny finished with 2-3 and resumes on a hat-trick when he next bowls.

Gary and DFS opened our batting and our modest run chase did not start well. The gentle left arm flight of Reyer soon claimed both of our openers with only 5 runs on the board. Bergy and Manny dashed any hopes of a miraculous victory for the home side with a partnership of 39 in 9 overs. Bergy made 22 before he was bowled attempting to drive a full ball from Smith.

Mohit came to the crease and immediately stroked the ball elegantly around the ground. He showed particular grace and poise when clipping anything off his legs. It was a surprise when he over balanced and was stumped off the bowling of Gledstone’s for 15.

Manny was in cruise control and was hitting boundaries for fun. He finished the match 38 not out and is proving to be a vital player to us. It was fitting that Harrison hit the winning runs with a back foot drive through the covers for 4. Harrison finished on 8 not out in a fleeting cameo.

It was an important morale boosting victory after the disappointment of the Salthill game. We gained 22 valuable points and it puts us in good spirits to tackle Locks Heath II in a tough fixture this Saturday. Well done lads. Up the Mighty Three’s. Bring it on!
