Waterlooville III v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 2.00pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 12 runs

Match report The development side slipped to defeat in a crunch game on the slope against Waterlooville.

When the 3s game was cancelled, Connor came in to the side as a last minute replacement to bolster the seam attack. For once, the skipper won what appeared to be an important toss and put the opposition in on a wicket recently soaked by rain. However Vetcher, the Waterlooville skipper, set about the bowling with some fierce hitting and the hosts had raced to 46/0 from 8 overs. When he was bowled by the tidy Harrison, the rate slowed dramatically and the next 14 overs yielded just 40 runs, with Connor and Mani bowling beautifully. The middle order put in another burst as the hosts looked to reach 200, but P&S came back at them again and the last 6 overs went for just 17 runs, Connor finishing with superb figures of 10-6-18-2.

We were confident we could knock off the 177 needed but never quite got to grips with the slope on the wicket. Bangers was caught at gully driving at one that was leaving him down the hill and so began a procession of wickets. By the 6th over we were 12/3, and when Tristan was unlucky to see the ball spin back on to his stumps we were reeling at 33/5. Neil came in to join the reliable Simon and set about making the score respectable, setting small targets and chalking them off. At 30 overs we were 99/5, still needing 78 to take the most unlikely of victories, but as the runs kept coming without further loss, there was a glimmer of hope that we might get there. Simon made his 50 as we edged past 130, but the rate was over 9/over and despite the skipper reaching his maiden 50 with a six over deep mid wicket in the final over, we fell 12 short in our chase.

A good effort against a decent side; we have one game left to bounce back and finish what has been a fantastic first season with a victory and cement a top 5 finish.

MOM: For an outstanding knock of discipline, Simon's 74no sees him as MOM, well played mate.
