“DOUG CAN SCORE FIVE HUNDRED FOURS
AND DOUG CAN SCORE FIVE HUNDRED MORE
DOUGIE BULLEN, DOUGIE BULLEN, DOUGIE BULLEN, DOUGIE BULLEN
HE SMASHED THE BALL TO EVERY PART OF THE PARK”
P&S BATSMAN FEAST ON FAIR OAK’S BOWLING
Once again we won the toss and it was no surprise that the Skipper choose to bat first on the artificial wicket with the sun beating down hard on it. Doug opened with Gary who was making his debut for the team on the back of three consecutive not out half centuries for the 4th team. They put on a monumental partnership of 201 from only 29 overs.
Doug was the first to his fifty and Gary soon followed within a few balls. They were neck and neck until Doug put on the afterburners when they were both in the sixties.
Doug was feasting himself upon the bowling and he was insatiable. It was like his bat had become a Cornucopia and it was gorging itself on an endless supply of boundaries. Doug brought up his century in fitting style with a huge six over mid-wicket.
Gary was very impressive and he was quick to seize on any errors from the bowlers. He cut and drove the ball at every opoortunity and he was finally caught for 79. He’s innings consisted of four sixes and eight fours.
Bibek was next in and he had metaphorically mopped up his salivating mouth on a frequent basis, whilst waiting patiently for his opportunity to join in with the run feast. When it finally arrived he quite literally sprinted to the middle like a deranged Usain Bolt dressed in cricket attire. He immediately got stuck into the plethora of offerings by drilling a six straight down the ground.
Doug and Bibek were dovetailing in an orgy of boundaries. Doug reached the incredible milestone of 150 with a single down to long on. Another rasping four followed and it was a surprise when his majestic innings came to an end. Doug danced down the track attempting another gigantic six, but he was beaten by the flight of the ball and was stumped for 154.
Everyone watching and to the credit of the Fair Oak players, gave Doug a deserved standing ovation for a magnificent innings. Doug smashed 9 sixes and 17 fours in his colossal 154. It was a devastating display of attacking stoke play and he demolished the bowling.
Doug and Bibek had put on an astonishing 75 runs in a partnership from only 5 overs. There was no respite for the bowlers as Qaisir joined the slaughter. He instantly tore into the helpless bowling attack and timed the ball with frightening power. He pulled and drove the ball imperiously and made 33 in five overs at the crease, which consisted of 4 sixes and 2 fours. Bibek and Qaisir put on an unbelievable stand of 74 runs from 5 overs. If Qaisir had not been caught of a thick outside edge, there was every chance we could of scored 400.
Bergy went in at number five with only two overs remaining. Bibek was on 71 and there was an outside chance that he could reach a century himself. He added another eight, including a huge six, before he holed out to long on, whilst attempting another six.
It was a majestic 79 from Bibek. It was full of exquisite timing and classical technique. It was a joy to watch and he hit 8 sixes and 3 fours in his scintillating 79 from only 11 overs.
Bergy was 8 not out and Sathish 4 not out at the end. We closed our inning’s on a mammoth 378-4 from 42 overs. We scored at a rate of 9 runs an over. INCREDIBLE.
Khartik and Pete opened the bowling and for once Khartik wasn’t the chief tormentor. Pete took on that mantle and claimed the first four wickets. Wickets were hard to come by on the artificial track, but Pete bucked the trend with his tempting and teasing length. Pete had picked up 4 wickets at the end of his 8th over, but he couldn’t quite get his fifefer. He finished with 4-40 from his 10 overs.
With such a one-sided match and the early inroads made by Pete, the game drifted slightly in the heat of the late afternoon. An excellent stand from Potter and Reed were holding us up and we were running out of overs to bowl Fair Oak out. Bergy was frequently switching the bowlers around in the need to take wickets.
The Skipper brought himself on and got the breakthrough with his off spin. Bergy tempted Potter into mistiming a drive to Dinesh, who took a well judged catch at mid-on. Potter departed for 47 and Fair Oak were 156-5 in the 37th over.
The returning Khartik bowled Herbert with a terrific Yorker and we had regained some momentum. That gained pace when Doug run out Wood in the next over and Fair Oak had slipped to 159-7 in the 39th over.
Bergy struck again in the 40th over and we had taken 4 wickets in 4 overs. Bergy put one on the spot and S.Reed top edged it onto Tom’s helmet and it ballooned towards fly slip, where Gary dived full length to take a superb catch with the ball inches from the ground.
We were swarming all over the batsman, but we couldn’t get the final elusive two wickets from the last two remaining overs. This was chiefly down to H.Reed who had played a brilliant innings in the middle order and ended the match 56 not out.
We gained 23 points in our landslide victory of 208 runs. It was an incredible batting display and one that I have never witnessed by any team in the years that I have been playing cricket. Our batting finally achieved what it has been threatening to do all season. It was set up by the sensational opening partnership of 201, which allowed the carnage to follow.
We now go into our biggest game of the season against Curdridge, full of belief on the back of this fantastic performance. It is a massive game and if we win it, we would be full of confidence for the Bedhampton game the following week. Bedhampton are just behind us and the next two games will go a long way in defining our season. We must embrace our next two fixtures and relish the opportunity to stamp our authority upon the league.
Well done lads. Up The Mighty 3rd’s. BRING IT ON!
