It was always going to be a difficult game for us, due to key players being drafted into the 2nd team to cover for missing players. I would like to thank Karthik for his amazing support with providing players and in the last instance with Sathish, quite literally at a moments notice, as Sathish was called up on the morning of the match, in unavoidable circumstances.

I would also like to thank the players who came into the side for their magnificent commitment and desire to give everything to the team. Without your support and the tireless efforts of Karthik the club would not have been able to field four full sides this week.

Onto the game itself. We won the toss and decided to bowl first on a green and soft wicket in overcast conditions. Khartik and Qasir opened our bowling against a Kerala side strengthened by six first team players, due to a blank weekend in their fixture list.

Karthik made the breakthrough with Tom claiming his first of four catches behind the stumps. Our bowlers were finding it hard to make inroads into Kerala’s batting, but at least we were restricting them to three runs an over.

Sam took the next wicket with a brilliant catch from Karthik Madavan charging in from long on. Sam was the pick of the bowlers and finished with fine figures of 4-43 from his ten overs. Sam regularly takes wickets and already has seven from his two league matches.

Tom produced the champagne moment of the day when he took an outstanding running catch over his head, culminating with a full length dive to remove Renil, (the Kepil Dev dopel ganger). Tom then proceeded to take a sharp stumping on his way to claiming a fifer and in doing so demonstrating his full repertoire in a master class of wicket keeping. Kerala were all out in the last over of their innings for 211 when Qasir got the final wicket.

Dinesh and Karthik Madavan made a steady reply at the start of our innings and it was a hammer blow when Karthik fell for an elegant 16. It brought an end to us all being mesmerised by his sublime stroke play and graceful timing, when he surprisingly toe ended a caught and bowled to Anoop.

Qasir was the next to fall with a characteristic brutal and rapid 20. A flurry of wickets fell soon after with batsman playing ever more expansively in their quest to hit boundaries to try and stop the run rate reaching double figures.

In the end the tail tried valiantly to gain us an extra batting point in a losing cause. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain, as we were all out for 120 and agonisingly five runs short of another batting point. It was another brave performance from us in difficult circumstances and I was proud of everyone’s efforts. We now need to dust ourselves off and head into our next match against Gosport and to get a win under our belts.
