Match Report

We went to Ryde full of anticipation for a tough game of cricket. We had received lots of feedback about their suspect conduct, but we were prepared to be open minded. I have played league cricket for close to 30 years and during that time I have played in county 1 and very occasionally in southern league, but I was surprised at the contempt with which some of their players valued us and the spirit of the game.

Now onto the game. Ryde won the toss and they elected to bat with the sun baking down on their postal stamp ground. We opened with Shan who was deputising for the missing Karthik, due to work commitments. Shan bowled quickly, but he struggled to find his length and line. Ramesh opened from the opposite end and bowled superbly. Ramesh dismissed Butcher with a mistimed pull that gently looped into Neil’s gloves. Ryde were 11-1 and that brought Barton to the crease.

Shan had Niemiec dropped with a difficult chance at first slip as we continued our bright start to the game. Barton was rattling along with a series of bludgeoning fours predominately through mid-on and extra cover. The Skipper moved everyone out a further “20 yards” onto the boundary, with the exception of a mid-wicket and a man in the covers.

Sathish replaced Shan in the 9th over and in the 15th over he produced the champagne moment of the match. He clean bowled Barton with an in-swinger that kept a little low. We were all delighted to see the back of Barton, who had hit an incredible 331 not out against Porchester in an earlier match. The Skipper roared triumphantly “what a wicket” to Sathish for removing such a formidable foe. Unfortunately, Barton failed recognise this as a compliment and mistook it as an insult.

Sam came on and trapped Niemiec LBW with only his third delivery, whom we had dropped three times before making a fortuitous 40. Ryde were 122-3 from 24 overs and we were right in the mix. Louden came in at number 5 and changed the momentum of the match. He dispatched his first two deliveries for two big sixes and proved to be far more destructive than Barton.

By the time the returning Ramesh had Loudon caught for 78 from a well-judged catch by Sam at long on, Loudon and Higgins had put on 101 from 11 overs. Ryde were now 223-4 with 6 overs remaining. We were fighting hard to stay in the game. By the close Ryde had reached 264-6. Sam and Sathish had claimed another wicket each by the end of the innings. It was a gutsy effort by us full of enthusiasm and displayed our indefatigable spirit. 264 was a good total, but it was not a monstrous score on such a small pitch. We felt we had the ability to chase down the runs.

Ben and Jason began our innings to a torrent of sledging from the Ryde slip cordon; they got us off to a steady start and after 9 overs we were a respectable 35-0. Unfortunately, from then on it descended into a capitulation against some very erratic bowling, which at times it appeared the main objective was to knock our heads off. Kellor was soon on his second warning for bowling beamers, but at least Hendy was bowling a safe length.

Jason was the first to lose his wicket when he was caught behind by the wicket keeper standing up. He was attempting to leave a good length ball from Hendy, but he got a faint bottom edge and he was on his way for 20. Ben followed next edging a drive to the slips for a gutsy 18. Kellor was then banned from bowling for the rest of the match, when he bowled his third beamer. Barton came on to finish the over and begin his spell of bowling.

The skipper was out the last ball before drinks in the 14th over. He mistimed a dart of a high full toss, which was sent down from Barton and ended up in cow corners hands. Wickets continued to fall at an alarming rate and it was all over by the 20th over. We were all out for a very disappointing 95 against an ordinary attack. We have faced better attacks this season, but without the gamesmanship and the juvenile distractions.

It is an honour and a privilege to captain such a team of fantastic people. I was filled with pride at your integrity in the face of blatant intimidation at times, and your determination to give it your best. Each one of you can be proud of your efforts and of your conduct. The result sheet will record that we lost the match, but in the spirit of the game and in common decency there was only one set of winners and that was us.
