Match Report

I would like to begin by paying tribute to Porchester’s commitment to fulfilling the fixture with only nine players against a team who are second in the league. They were a credit to themselves and the league.

Porchester won the toss and elected to bat, but it wasn’t long before the ever impressive Karthik began to make inroads into their top order. With a strong swirling wind blowing around the ground, Karthik came steaming in from The Creek end. After softening up the opposing Skipper with a vicious delivery that pinned him painfully in the back of the knee, Karthik bowled him with a booming in-swinger the very next ball.

Karthik once again was in a fluent rhythm and he soon had another two wickets to his name. First, Ben Miles took a high catch running in from mid-off with consummate ease and then Karthik produced another jaffa, that swung late to gate their number 3 and crash into the timber.

Connor was charging in from The Kendall end and was producing a fine display of disciplined swing bowling, to a 6-3 field. He was constantly probing the off stump and both him and Karthik were unlucky on several occasions not take any wickets with catches behind the stumps, that were either very difficult or just out of reach for the 2 slips and the gulley. Conner did get the wicket he deserved with a fine swinging delivery, that moved prodigiously in the air and clean bowled their bemused number 5.

Karthik got his final wicket of the day with another catch from Ben Miles at mid-off. Unfortunately, Karthik could not get his fifer, but it was great to see him finally getting the wickets that his superb bowling has merited this season. He finished with the brilliant figures of 4-23 from his 10 overs. At drinks Porchester were 61-5.

There was no respite for the opposition with the menacing pace and swing of Ramesh and the attacking off spin of Sam, replacing Karthik and Connor. Ramesh dismissed their number 6 with an outswinger that produced a thick outside edge that flashed off the bat and the Skipper took a one handed leaping catch to his right at gulley.

Sam picked up the final two wickets of the innings. The first with a delivery of impeccable length that clean bowled the batsman. The next was to remove their number 4 who top scored with 33. It was a wonderfully flighted delivery that drew the batsman down the wicket and gave Tom Collet the opportunity to take a sharp stumping on his first league game of the season. Porchester were all out for 70 and it was another superb display from our bowlers, which was backed up admirably by our tight fielding. A special mention goes to Doug, who was outstanding in the covers.

In reply, we were missing key players at the top of our order and together with chasing such a modest total, we did not play our natural game to begin with. We were determined to get maximum points from the game and that did inhibit our approach at the start. Against some very modest bowling we were caught in two minds about how to reach our objective and after 5 overs we were surprisingly 14-3. Maximum points had now gone and it was time to re-assert our authority and to gain some momentum to our batting ahead of our biggest game of the season next week against the leaders Ryde Cavaliers. The Skipper joined Bangers and a partnership of 32 from 6 overs was forged, before Bangers was out lbw for 10 in the 11th over.

Sathish was next in and the game was won in the next 3 overs. 35 runs were plundered to all parts of the ground from both the Skipper who ended up 22 not out and Sathish who at the end was 18 not out. We had recorded another win and gained 23 points. Our next game is massive and I can’t wait to take on the leaders Ryde Cavaliers. It is going to be our biggest test yet. Whatever happens there will be no quarter given by us. I am delighted that we are playing them in their own back yard, because that would make it even sweeter if we could beat them. Let’s take our “A” game over there and really express ourselves.
