Match Report
We bounced back from our first defeat in the most emphatic fashion. We destroyed our opponents who were above us in second place. Once again we elected to bat first with the intention of posting a big total and then attacking with the ball.
Simon and Jason opened and for the second week running they got us off to the perfect start. Simon was quick to cut whenever he was offered any width and Jason was his belligerent self. He cut, drove and pulled at every opportunity and it was a surprise when he mistimed a pull shot and was out for 47. It was another great innings from the Big Man and in the 18th over we were 80-1.
Unfortunately, the innings was temporarily derailed when Ben Miles, Ollie and the Skipper all fell cheaply. Simon was his reliable self and was providing the back bone from which our middle order could launch an assault. The expansive Satish set about the bowling and a rapid partnership of 25 was ended when Simon eventually nicked one behind for a very good 42.
Karthik was immediately into his stride with a pull shot off his first ball that whistled for four to deep backward square. When Satish was bowled for 21 attempting to add to several flamboyant boundaries, a total of 175 appeared to be a realistic target.
However, when Neil joined Karthik with 5 overs remaining they proceeded to obliterate the bowling and added 51 belligerent and audacious runs. We closed on 202-6 and once again we had achieved maximum batting points. Kerala staggered off the pitch reeling and totally demoralised by the frenzied onslaught that had been meted out to them by Karthik and Neil.
Connor and Karthik opened our bowling attack and because of our batting exploits, the Skipper was able to set an attacking field from the start. Three slips and gulley were lined up as our potent seamers steamed in. In only his second over Connor claimed his first wicket, courtesy of a thick edge off an attempted drive to his Skipper at gulley.
Connor’s next over saw him remove the other opener with a mistimed pull to Satish at mid-wicket. Soon after he got his third with a nick behind to Neil. After 16 overs of incessant attacking bowling, Kerala were 46-3. I am still mystified how Karthik did not get a wicket from his ferocious bowling. Even so, the miserly 15 runs he conceded off his 8 overs is testament to his accuracy.
Next up was the twin pronged attack of off spin. Sam is rapidly earning himself a burgeoning reputation as a fine off spinner. In his second over he removed Kerala’s best batsman by some distance with that much maligned and often underrated delivery The Full Toss, which the opposition’s Skipper gently top edged to Jason in the covers.
Ben Jackson on his first appearance of the season, trapped the number 6 lbw and Kerala were in tatters at 71-5. Sam then plundered two wickets in his fifth over. The first was another catch to Jason in the covers, with the batsman trying to drive against the spin. The second was a ridiculous reverse sweep, which the batsman sent towards Ben Jackson at backward point, who took a fine diving catch. Sam finished with his second 3 wicket haul in successive matches.
Ben claimed his second wicket with the Skipper gleefully taking the catch at mid-off. Then Sam reciprocated a fine diving catch in the covers to Ben for his third wicket. Ben then finished the innings by clean bowling the number eleven with his next delivery. He starts his next league match on a hat-trick and finished with the impressive figures of 4-25. The Spin twins had wreaked havoc and had taken 7 wickets in 10 overs. We had slaughtered a team in second place by a massive 109 runs and gained another maximum haul of 24 points.
It was a great response to our first defeat of the season and it was our most complete performance of the campaign. I am extremely proud of everyone and delighted that we got our rewards in the field after the preparation that we put in before the game.
