Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 3rd XI v Rowner II on Sat 28 May 2016 at 2pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 128 runs
Match report
Portsmouth and Southsea won the toss and elected to bat first on a rock hard track. Although it was a flat deck and did not misbehave it was tailor made for Rowner’s opening bowlers. They bowled their allotted overs straight through and it was tough going against their slow medium nagging length on a slow wicket.
Simon and Ben showed a lot of patience and concentration in trying to keep their wicket, while also trying to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Bangers came to the crease after Ben was Bowled. Bangers went against his natural attacking instincts and knuckled down. He just began to stamp his authority on the bowlers when a momentary lack of concentration saw him depart for a hard earned 8.
Simon followed soon after for a very good 17, which highlighted his usual gritty determination and expertise at working the ball around. Although we were 44-3 at drinks and had two new bats at the crease, the first three batsman had done a great job in providing the rest of the team with the opportunity to launch an attack on the change bowlers.
That is exactly how it played out with Neil and the skipper forging a fantastic partnership of 101. Neil setting the tone at the start by dispatching Rowner’s off spinner for four fours in one over. Neil and the Skipper dove tailed in a boundary fest. When Neil departed for 41 and just 9 runs short of his maiden 50 for the club, we were 133-4 in the 33rd over.
Satish, Doug and Karthik all played swift and priceless cameos by smashing boundaries to all parts of the ground before selflessly giving their wickets away in pursuit of the 200 needed for maximum batting points. The ever improving Vice Captain Sam joined the Skipper for the last four overs with us still needing 20 runs. Sam played sensible with a good technique and worked the ball around and he played a vital role in us closing on 203-7. The skipper finished not out on 88.
We opened our bowling with Karthik from the Creek end and Ramesh from the Kendell end. As always Karthik bowled an impeccable line and length and got movement both off the pitch and in the air. Karthik once again got us on our way with a jaffer that snicked the edge of the opposing Skippers’ bat and was pouched by the safe gloves of Neil. Karthik bowled his set of 10 overs straight through and was unfortunate to only add one more wicket against his name, with a comfortable catch taken by Doug in the covers. It is only a matter of time before Karthiks’ excellent bowling will get the rewards it deserves and he will blow a teams batting away.
Connor replaced Ramesh at the Kendell end and immediately settled into a good rhythm and was getting a tremendous shape to the ball, with regular movement both ways. Connor got the prized wicket of Rowner’s other opener M. Darby who was their best batsman by some distance and was looking dangerous. It was a peach of a delivery that left Darbys’ forward defensive and Simon did well to take a smart catch, which he saw late with Neil moving across him with the gloves.
The same combination was at it again soon afterwards with the dismissal of Downing from another away swinger safely caught by Simon at first slip. Connor was on fire and another late away swinger gave Neil his second victim with the gloves. It was a classic spell of swing bowling with all the catches taken behind the stumps and at drinks Rowner were in disarray at 55-5.
Connor had the bit between his teeth and his relentless assault resumed after the drinks break. It was not long before Karthik treated us to one of his spectacular catches to make it four wickets to Connor. The procession continued with Neil getting his third catch behind the stumps from a ball that rose sharply of a good length with the extra pace that Connor was generating. It was a fitting way to bring up his fifefer. In a devastating spell of 6 overs, Connor had figures 5 for 5.
Connor was still charging in when he got his last wicket with Ben taking control of a skier with three P and S fielders converging on the same ball. Connor finished with 6-10 from 7 overs. Simply Brilliant. From the Creek end Sam had replaced Karthik and bowled a tidy spell that showcased his versatility with dismissals of the last two Rowner batsman. The first wicket was caught by Bangers at mid wicket from a leggie. The final wicket was from a beautifully flighted off break which spun sharply and bowled the batsman through the gate. Text book off break dismissal. Great work Vice.
Rowner were skittled for 75 and we had won by a landslide 128 runs. We were bullish, relentless and ruthless and this is exactly the style of cricket we want to be playing. That is maximum points from our first two games and now we move onto our next challenge full of intent to continue our brand of aggressive cricket.

Champagne moment
Neil Sanson. Four fours off one over.
Myself and Sam would like to thank everyone for their efforts off the pitch as well on Saturday. It made our lives easier with everyone mucking in and the tea was fantastic.
Finally, a big thankyou to Bibek who was kind enough to give up his time and umpire for the entire first innings. Even though he will be out of the game for a short time, his infectious enthusiasm still has a profound effect on the performance of our team. Bibek is a vital member to our team and we were all lifted and delighted to see him.
