Match report New Milton decided to bat first on a bright green pitch. When Aftab bowled Shrubsole with the eighth ball of the afternoon and no runs on the board it was impossible not to think it was the wrong choice. However, the next wicket fell in the 36th over with 118 the total. This was in Aftab’s second spell when he removed Davids and Teddy Golding, both bowled. The innings subsided to 187 for 6 with two dismissals from Felix. New Milton will have been disappointed not to claim the fifth batting point.
The reply got off to a quick start with 6 boundaries in the first six overs, but the next six lowered the run rate. Acceleration took the total to 99 at the half way point in the innings, before Matt was caught. Jack had made 50 by then and since his restoration to opening had scored 39, 59 not out, 30 and 14 and it was clear that he was in for the long haul.
Felix perished at 110 and George at 137 before Tom joined Jack in a stand of 57 which ended with just 21 needed from the last six overs and Jack on 87. Once he had reached his tenth league century, Max delivered the coup de gras, clinching 20 match points and climbing back to 5th in the table.
