Match report Ben was possibly wanting to lose the toss given the weather forecast, but a fine batting performance and a willing attitude from the umpires enabled P & S to achieve a result despite the intervention of rain. Four good innings added to five good partnerships created the highest total the team had made for some time.
Matt and Felix began with 57 from eleven overs at which point two wickets fell. Jack and Felix then added 53 for the third wicket in nine overs. Jack and Tom combined to make 47 for the fifth wicket which fell at 167 when Jack’s best innings of the season ended. Dean was run out at189 before Tom and Ben produced 50 more. Tom’s fine effort ended at 239 with three overs remaining. Aggressive batting and good running enabled Ben and Jake to plunder 32 in that short time.
Liphook’s reply was positive and aggressive as was appropriate. The openers saw off the opening bowlers with a partnership of 70 in just 13 overs. Things started to go wrong at this point. Ben took three wickets in a maiden over and four runs later, Max had Nicklin lbw. Rain sent the fielders scurrying for the covers with the scoreboard showing 80 for 4 from 17 overs. At this point, no further play would have meant match abandoned, but after a long delay, the umpires decided to allow 15 more overs in which time Liphook needed to reach 231.
This period of play had a surreal quality, especially when Jono and Jake bowled off a couple of paces due to the damp underfoot conditions. Harry Munt’s wicket was the only one to fall as 79 runs were added before the players shook hands and left the field.
