Match report A fifth successive league win strengthened our team’s second position in the league table and plunged St Cross to bottom place. Nevertheless, this close match was a much harder victory than those against Fair Oak, Hartley Wintney, Gosport and Liphook. St Cross won’t be relegated if they can maintain the attitude that they showed at St James’s
Having chosen to bat first, the visiting openers began aggressively and had 30 on the board before being parted in the ninth over. Eleven runs later their second wicket fell, heralding a collapse in which four wickets fell for the addition of six runs in 16 deliveries. Three of these fell to Jake, giving figures of 4 for 20 in his eighth over.
Hugh Lewis and Laney then added 26 for the sixth wicket before the match was turned on its head by Wilson and Laney adding 106 in 20 overs. The four bowling points meant that it was then impossible to achieve maximum points.
P & S made a similar start to that of St Cross. There was 25 on the board when the first wicket fell, after which Matt and Usman put on 44 in ten overs. Jack replaced Usman and 34 were added for the third wicket. Ollie and Matt then added 32. Matt’s fine innings ended at 159 for 5. Tom and Dean added 31 but both were out on 190, leaving a target of 22 from nine overs. Ben was dismissed by a shooter on 203 before Jake and Max applied the finish with an over to spare much to the relief of the home supporters. The two wickets remaining enabled the home side to take maximum batting points.
