Match report St Cross took advantage of being inserted at St James’s. Their captain, Overy played a very dour innings, opening the batting and defying the home bowlers for 45 overs while former Hampshire professional Jason Laney, Foster, Harden and Hirst played more aggressive roles at the opposite end. Their innings contained two half century partnerships; 54 for the second wicket and 58 for the fourth. Max profited from the rather frantic close to the innings as four wickets fell for 13 in three overs. Matt Williams took no wickets but was very economical. St Cross took only 3 batting points from their 50 overs.
After tea it was soon clear that winning the match wouldn’t be easy. When 14 overs had been bowled the reply stood at 34 for 3. Jack and Tom then added 24 runs in 9 overs, both being tied down by the accuracy of the visiting spinners whose combined figures were 24.2-5-54-6. Sadly, 24 was the highest partnership of the innings and 10.4 overs went unused while the 125 needed for a batting point remained out of reach.
St Cross, in my opinion, had the best bowling group we have encountered this season so far.
