Hook & Newham Basics II v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket

Match report A quarter of an hour into this match, the scoreboard read 9 for 4 in the fourth over and it was easy to imagine a repeat of Langley Manor away last season. However, this did not happen and this reflects well on the mental strength of the rest of the batting.
Initially, the damage was repaired by Tom and Toby whose partnership realised 48 in 12 overs. Once they had been dismissed, Dean and Max added 23 in 6 overs before the latter was the victim of a very dubious decision. Ben replaced him and so began the best stand of the innings, producing 57 in 13 overs. Ben departed at 149 for 8 and Bailey helped Dean to reach his 50 and clinch a third batting point which had seemed so unlikely earlier in the day.
The home side got off to a cracking start, scoring 40 before Max took the first wicket in the eighth over. Ben’s two wickets then made it 46 for 3 in the 11th over. It was game on, but Tom Dyer and Light shared a partnership of 61 in just 12 overs before a risky single cost Dyer his wicket. One run later, Light skied an easy catch to Jack at cover point and at 108 for 5 at the half way stage, it was folly to predict the outcome.
The remarkable 13 year old Manny Lumsden with Scott Dyer swung the game towards Hook with 41 in 8 overs before Jono removed the latter at 149 with 18 overs to go. Wyatt helped Lumsden add 24 in 7 overs before Brewer hoiked Ewen straight to mid on with no addition to the total (173 for 8). Lumsden was caught at slip with the scores level after Dovey had survived a strong appeal for a catch behind.
The coup de grace was delivered by Ollie May who nervelessly drove his first ball to the long off boundary. Seven points seem a rather meagre reward for such a close game, but on reflection, it is more than seemed likely at 9 for 4.
