Match report Sparsholt won the toss and batted first on a pale and good looking pitch. The openers were quickly into their stride, the 50 coming up in nine overs. Max was introduced into the attack for Matt and broke the partnership at 74 in the 15th over. Ewen had begun his spell at the pavilion end and the scoring rate gradually declined. Ben’s first over was the 21st and the two spinners continued in tandem to the detriment of the run rate. Ewen signed off with wickets in his last two overs at which point the home side were 120 for 4.
Keiron replaced Ewen and bowled Ley off his pads and one run later Ben collected his second scalp to make the score 140 for 6. Max and Jono returned to mop up the tail with help from Tom’s run out. 169 was a challenge the visitors would have accepted prior to the game and Sparsholt would have been disappointed after such a good start.
Their start with the ball didn’t begin well. Matt struck three driven boundaries and 15 was on the scoreboard. After making a great impression last week, Ewen experienced the downside of the game when bowled on the back foot by one the looked to keep a bit low. Ironically, Ley followed his successful first ball with 2 no balls and a wide before Shaun took him for 6, 4 and 4. After two overs the board showed 32 for one !
The 100 came up in 13 overs and the scoring continued in a slightly more sedate rate, presumably in the knowledge that maximum batting points were available if no more wickets fell.
When Matt pushed the winning run, there were more than 26 overs left unbowled.
It’s a bit pointless to look at league tables this early in the season, but, for the record, we are equal topwith Hartley Wintney.
