Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Liphook & Ripsley on Sat 13 May 2023 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 69 runs

Match report Although this match ended as a comfortable victory to mark P & S’s first experience of Division 2 cricket, there were periods when the visitors looked likely to take the 12 winning points.
Ben won the toss and decided to bat. The ground was soft and the pitch very helpful to the bowlers during the first innings. The top three all played and missed on numerous occasions. However, Liphook didn’t take full advantage of this situation with only one wicket taken in the first 37 overs.
Matt departed at 28 in the 13th over, having hit three handsome boundaries.
There followed a partnership between debutant Ewen and Toby which added 80, but the trying conditions meant that it took nearly 25 overs. Jack was quickly on the offensive before a leg before decision meant Tom was joining Ewen. The latter had shown a good technique and calm approach, but when accelerating, was caught in the deep at 156 with six overs to go.
Dean and Tom put on 27 in four overs before the latter was also caught in the deep. Chris and Dean then added 21 from the 13 balls remaining, giving the bowlers a realistic chance of defending the total.
Continual sunshine ensured that the pitch was gradually drying and the Liphook openers found it much to their liking. They reached 56 in thirteen overs before Max had Covey caught. Ten boundaries had been struck by that point, illustrating the easier nature of the pitch. Keiron then took two wickets in 7 deliveries, including the dangerous Nicklin.
Ewen, bowling left arm spin was introduced in the 23rd over and immediately sent back Amis (92 for 4). His second over was even better as he achieved a hat trick with the last three deliveries. This left Munt to bat with the tail with 109 to get from 25 overs.
Ben trapped Munt leg before, sweeping and despite some resistance from Brixton, Ewen had the last two caught with 70 still needed.
This was a debut that will last long in the memory. 21 points were secured with just one batting point left short of the maximum. Given the early season conditions and lack of match practice, this was a very good result.
