Match report At last it was achieved; promotion and the Southern League Division 3 title that has long been the Holy Grail for the Portsmouth & Southsea team. Gosport’s run of five consecutive wins was brought to an end by a good team performance despite missing three regular members. Young Tom Wheeler will look back with pride at his contribution to what became a winning total after the team had slumped to 85 for five.
Ben won the toss and with no rain predicted, chose to bat. The openers did a sound job, not being parted until 46 runs were posted in 15 overs. After half the side were out, Tom B and Dean took the total on to 111 when Dean skied a catch. Gosport looked favourites at this point, but the last four wickets added 81 in the remaining 19 overs, giving the bowling attack a much more encouraging task.
Gosport’s openers began with 30. Harrop, who had looked dangerous, being Jake’s first victim. This was to be comfortably the highest partnership of the innings. 30 for 0 became 74 for 9 as Ben dismissed half the visiting team, increasing his wicket total to 43. The final partnership between Prathapasinghe and veteran Pete Robson lasted 10 overs and at 14 was the third highest of the innings, demonstrating to their teammates that patience is a virtue.
A word of thanks is due to Matt Benfield for keeping wicket in the absence of Chris and Alex. He didn’t let anyone down.
The record now stands at 320 points from 17 games, with the likelihood that Langley Manor will be runners up. Relegated Purbrook visit St James’s for the final league match of 2022.
