Sway v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 23 Jul 2022 at 12.30pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
The pressure of continuing the unbeaten run showed at Sway, but victory was achieved by a very narrow margin. Ben won the toss and chose to bat in fine weather. After 14 overs the score was 65 without loss and hopes of a big total were high. However, the following over from left armed Grasham changed the mood. From the second ball, Matt was brilliantly caught low down in the covers. Two balls later, Shaun who was looking good, was run out by a direct hit, so both the new batsmen were on nought. They added 26 before Jake departed and ten runs later, Jack was dismissed by another excellent low catch off a full-blooded shot. The run rate was badly affected by these events and by the time Dean was caught in the 37th over the score was a worrying 130 for 6.
Tom had started very carefully and sustained the innings until he was very well caught and bowled in the final over. Max and Ben assisted in partnerships of 20 and 26 respectively. The final total looked to be potentially a winning score with Sway missing several first choice batsmen.
Jono struck a severe blow from the twelfth ball of Sway’s innings, bowling the captain, Noble. Max dismissed the next two to leave the home side 29 for three in the 17th over. Things got worse for them when Shaun ran out Marshall with a direct hit. Keiron inflicted further misery with two wickets in his first four deliveries. 48 for six looked like curtains for Sway, but a partnership of 75 in 19 overs between Grasham and Burton put them in a much healthier position. They needed 70 from the last six overs and very nearly got them thanks to Ramwell’s clean hitting.
So a twelfth consecutively win reinforced P & S’s position at the top of the table while Langley Manor moved above Sway into second places, over 50 points behind.
