Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Sway on Sat 21 May 2022 at 12.30pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Wow ! This was a match which will stay in the memory for a long time. Even the umpires enjoyed it, particularly regarding the spirit in which it was played. The outcome was that P & S continued their winning start to the season and are one point behind the leaders, Paultons. Seven points seems an inadequate return for Sway’s part in this encounter, but that is all they finished with.
Ben decided to field first as has happened in each league match so far. The visiting openers made a very cautious start, the fifty arriving in the twentieth over. Max made the breakthrough shortly after, having replaced Jake. Matt bowled accurately in his unbroken spell before Keiron took over. The Sway scoring rate did not reach three runs per over until the 36th over when Keiron took his second wicket. At this point Sway abandoned their original batting order and promoted the lower order to raise the scoring rate. This was successful as Bernard and then Marshall upped the rate to almost four an over. The home fielding stood up well and only one very difficult catch was dropped.
The target then was identical to that of the previous match at Trojans, but after seven overs the board showed 23 for 3 and a partnership was desperately needed with both Jack and Alex on nought. It happened. 103 were added in 19 overs before Alex’s attractive innings ended. Tom stayed with Jack while 26 were added before he was caught behind off left armer Grasham. Wickets then fell regularly while Jack showed his calmness and fine judgement of situations. Jake batted for 20 minutes, but Sway would not give up the fight and Keiron was required to perform with the bat with four runs still needed, but seven overs in which to score them. The lively Steadman bowled the 44th over. Jack took a single off the fourth ball. Keiron survived the last two deliveries and Jack hoisted the second ball from Ramwell over extra cover for the winning boundary.
This was another triumph for Jack’s experience and game management. He batted for over two and a half hours, hit boundaries with excellent placement and batted with concentration that hardly ever wavered.
