Match report The last time we won at Trojans was in 2009. It was a T20 match in which we fielded a very young team due to unavailability of regular first teamers. The only player from that match still playing for the club was Jack who opened the bowling and didn’t bat in a five wicket win.
Over the years, Trojans away has been the scene of underwhelming performances, but yesterday broke the sequence. The pitch looked dry and Ed Boyd (who was the only player remaining from the 2009 match) chose to bat on winning the toss.
Matt struck the first blow by removing Le Bas who has been a particular thorn in our side in past meetings. Kelly and Boyd added 32 before the latter was also caught behind. This was to be the highest partnership of the innings which contained five stands of over twenty. Ben removed Kelly after Jake’s opening spell had totally becalmed him. Ben and Max bowled well to subdue the scoring rate and Jono removed a vibrantly wagging tail with the help of two skied and well-taken catches.
The target of 198 looked distinctly possible despite Matt’s early departure at 13-1. Twenty six had been added in 7 overs when Tom was caught low down at extra cover. Jack and Shaun then carefully built their partnership, reaching 50 in the 22nd over and then 100 in the 29th. The 150 partnership came up in the 32nd over, so the acceleration was impressive and brutal. Trojans were beaten well before the end of the match. The last 5.4 overs produced 81 runs from five different bowlers as the match was won with 17.2 overs remaining. Jack’s innings building acceleration has been seen many times and Shaun (who deserved 100) showed the early innings restraint that enabled him to bat to the end and play big shots too.
