Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost

Match report A tail of two last batter stands - Owen played an excellent hand for us while their Number 10 did the same to pip us at the post. Batting first Ollie and Charlie got us off to a strong start until Ollie was caught at a short mid off. Some hesitant running cost us a number of run outs and it wasn't until Ryan came to the crease our score advanced without the aid of extras. When he went, unluckily but well caught from a rebounded straight drive, Owen was our mainstay. One glorious straight batted, controlled and timed stroke - certainly the shot of the day - saw him thread a four (all along the ground) past the bowler and long off. Our inning ended much as it had progressed - with a run out. I will say it again; learning to run confidently, is the part of the game that will provide this team with the most immediate benefit.
With the ball, everyone either got a wicket or kept a lid on the scoring. Notable highlights were "10th Man Gully" getting their opener in the 1st over, Ned, Henri, Josh (the first of two) and Tom also getting wickets in their first over - Henri with his pinpoint first ball! Dylan was our most economical and Charlie again showed how much his bowling has progressed with a quick and straight pair of overs. Pick though was Ryan who took us to the cusp of victory with a triple wicket maiden, all bowled by his quick, full length bolts. Then came their last player stand. With 30 more needed she was simply not for dismissing and we would do well to note how she batted. With no big swings just compact, timed shots, she defended straight balls, hit offside balls through the off-side and legside ones to leg - really simple stuff but very effective and ultimately match winning. With our man Ryan returning with 3 needed, his second ball was timed to the cover boundary and we had been beaten.
Just think though, what a difference even an extra 2 or 3 runs might have made, let alone the 20 I think we might have missed? If Ryan had had a ball or two extra to take his fourth wicket. If, if, if.....
It was a cracking game of cricket, on a perfect summer evening, in a lovely setting and we have some really valuable learning to take from this. Well played.
