Match report Both teams had a lovely morning at St James and enjoyed an exciting game, littered with really great work from both sides. Our newbie's all took a step forward, so well done, and we were all treated to spectacular hitting from Portsmouth's James who recorded the first 50 I've seen in a soft ball U9 match.
Being asked to bat Sanna and Leah opened for us against the pick of their bowlers with neither getting out and both finding the ropes. Fin and Michael followed (with Michaels new blade glinting in the sun!). With a bit more confidence in their calling and running they might have picked up a few extra runs but made positive contributions. Our final pairing of Abi and James had to concentrate to hit the balls available and perhaps might have thought a bit harder about when was sensible to run but both got the ball away well with James emphatically finishing the innings with a 4. We had totaled 64 runs and lost only 4 wickets.
With ball in hand we bowled well but faced rather a storm off James bat. As we rotated the bowlers over by over 4 of our 6 faced a bit of the music. I was really proud of how we bowled. James was straight, Sanna waspishly quick, Fin found the odd real beauty and Leah kept an excellent line. Michael was working hard to master the art and we are seeing him get there. And finally, having whispered to me she didn't like bowling, Abi proceeded to put in a fine performance taking 2 for 2! We ended up a long way short of Portsmouth's 129 (but if you take James's greats effort out, think how close it would have been). A final mention should go to Sanna for the nearly catch as she made a tremendous effort to snaffle a thunderbolt.
