Pagham v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 17 Apr 2021 at 1pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
The 2021 season started with a Big Bang, a match more exciting than anyone had the right to expect in early April. Despite the continual sunshine, it wasn’t a day for shirt sleeves rolled up or no sweater. Pagham won the toss and decided to bat on a straw coloured pitch . Only one ball misbehaved all through the match, keeping low very early in proceedings.
The openers went for their shots straight away and had made 44 without loss from the opening 10 overs bowled by Jake and Jono. The next five overs included three maidens and this prompted Stannard to go for a risky single to Jack with only one stump to aim at. Hanks, the captain then struggled to get on strike and made only 12 while Smith accelerated before being well caught by Dean running round the mid wicket boundary. Prior to this, Max had retired hurt after a delivery was hit hard back at his right arm. Chris finished his over during which he bowled Hanks with the board showing 143 for 3 in the thirtieth over.
The non striker was Ryan Barratt who had already hit two sixes in his 27 not out. Due to his largely controlled aggression, Pagham made 110 from the last ten overs. He was particularly severe on the opening bowlers returning. The last five overs produced an analysis ruining 68 runs with Barratt carrying his bat for 108. Although two catches were dropped, the ground fielding was good throughout. Pagham sportingly provided substitutes for Max.
A target of over a run per ball seemed daunting despite the pitch being particularly unhelpful for bowlers. The first innings had shown that Ben’s off spin was the most economical. Matt and Jack had a good look at the early overs before Jack took 14 from Blanks’ second over. Growing in confidence, the built another century opening stand, more than doubling the home team’s start. Jack played on with 118 on the board in the 19th over. This would have greatly encouraged the rest of the team. Ollie scored nine from the first five balls he faced. Together, he and Matt added 52 in seven overs mainly off the medium pacers. Matt was caught on the extra cover boundary, having hit 12 boundaries some of which were exquisite.
At this point, 88 was needed from 14.4 overs and the money was on the visitors. Ollie played the anchor role very well, putting pressure on the fielders with well judged singles and turning singles into twos. None of his latter partners stayed long but all chipped in. Tom’s six in the 38th over made the job of winning much easier despite his dismissal next ball.
The last over began with seven runs need for victory. Ollie made two from the first ball, but Dean was given run out from the next going for a second run. Four were needed from the last four balls. Ollie faced the last ball with the scores level. He punctured the office field with a boundary and the closest of games was won.
