Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Waterlooville on Sat 24 Apr 2021 at TBC
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 28 runs
Match report
Our friends from Waterlooville were greeted by bright sunshine, a stiff breeze and a greenish pitch and on winning the toss, decided to bowl first. They were rewarded by plenty of movement and three early wickets, costing 30 runs in 11 overs. For the next 68 minutes they suffered as Alex, with stoic support from Chris, fell just short of a century, in a partnership of 120. This put a different complexion on the game. Both were out with the addition of only nine runs. Dean joined Umar with ten overs remaining and despite a slowish start, they added 67. Dean was caught in the deep off the last ball of the innings.
The visitors were required to score at more than five runs per over and for the first 12 overs they did that. However, four wickets were lost in so doing. Matt, making a welcome return to bowling was on a hat trick before injury curtailed his spell. Verma and Hudson made 31 in nine overs but with ten overs left, the score stood at 144 for 7. The home side were taken by surprise by a spirited stand of 50 between Pearce and Birch in just six overs, putting their side back in the game with a chance. When Birch was run out, 33 were needed from four overs, but the return of the opening bowlers provided too difficult a problem.
Plenty of positives could be taken from this match by both teams, with Saturday’s first Southern League match looming on the near horizon.
