Match report This tie, played at the unique Steephill Ground was far from a plumb draw. Ventnor, from Division Two are notoriously strong at home and despite fielding only six first teamers, were never in any real danger of losing the match. After a relatively quiet opening two overs yielding 11 runs, Whyte went into overdrive, plundering 71 off 39 balls. The first wicket provided no respite as the incoming batsman was Anthony Alleyne whose highest first-class score is 186 for Barbados v Trinidad. He and Whyte added 73 in seven overs before Max bowled the Barbadian. 110 off ten overs had me wondering whether 250 was on the cards, but the boys stuck at it. Matt and Umar took the next three wickets while 40 were added, but the arrival of Wells made sure that over two hundred would be needed.
Promoted to open, Dean was first to go, followed quickly by Ollie at 22 for 2. Thirty runs on, Matt’s desperate dive for the crease foundered. Tom made a quick 22 and when Alex was out, it was 86 for 5 with only 9 and a half overs to go. Jack and Max then assaulted the home bowling with 70 added in six overs. Unusually, both batsmen scored exactly 35 in this partnership. Jack had shown his versatility with two substantial but vastly different innings over the weekend.
Ironically, the final total of 177 was one run more than the winning total at Hook the previous day, scored off almost half the number of overs. It would have been easy to wilt facing a target of 203, but heads could be held high on departing the Isle of Wight.
