Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Purbrook on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at TBC
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 57 runs

Match report This was a crucial match for both teams, neither of which had yet to register a league win, partly due to the abysmal weekend weather in May. The rain had returned on Friday, so it was no surprise that the visitors chose to bowl first. Their decision met with instant success as Jack was caught at slip from the second ball of the match.
Ollie and Matt progressed carefully until the former was caught in the gully to make it 35 for two in the tenth over. Chris never go going and departed two overs later at 41. Only three overs had passed before Alex was caught behind. 47 for 4 was not the score of a team on top, but crucially, Matt was still there on 23. He found a willing partner in Dean and they added 44 in ten overs before Dean was caught on the mid wicket boundary.
Max soon left last weekend’s disappointments behind as the next nine overs brought 71. Matt was out with six overs to go, but had done a terrific job for the team. It was now 164 for six and the ascendancy had changed hands. Max , with a succession of partners added 34 before the innings closed. Maximum batting points had been achieved.
If anyone thought Purbrook were out of contention, they would have thought again when the openers reached 50 without loss from 10 overs, but Max was not finished with the limelight. His second ball had Harding caught at slip and in his following over, Figgins was caught behind. With his first ball after the short break, Barber was LBW and in his fifth over Nichol was stumped. At this point, Max had taken 4 for five in 32 balls and Purbrook were 79 for four. Mengham was still there on 13, his team’s last hope, with 110 needed from 21 overs. He obviously needed someone to stay with him, but the biggest remaining partnership was 23 for the eighth wicket with Price. Jake accounted for the last two men in four balls, aided by another slip catch by Matt. Maximum bowling points were achieved. A comfortable win was gained with uncomfortable passages on the way. Importantly, several players had improved on last week’s performance.
