Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Hartley Wintney on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 12.30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 54 runs

Match report An unusual afternoon began with Ray getting working on the used pitch rather close to the western side of the ground. It had been used for a midweek colts match and left uncovered. The pitch that was prepared had been covered but was too damp to use. One end of the used pitch was damp so the umpires wanted to give it time to dry, so the match didn’t start till 13:53. It had been reduced to 30 overs per side.
The visitors won the toss and decided to field. It was immediately clear that, unlike Hambledon last week, there was a lack of bounce which surprised nobody. Consequently, Jack and Matt made a careful start. The first wicket fell in the eleventh over with the score on 34. Little did we know that this would be comfortably the highest partnership of the match. Matt left on 47 after a huge straight six.
After 21 overs had been bowled, the score stood at 82 for 4 with Ollie and Dean together. The position seemed set fora reasonable total, but the introduction of leg spinner Brown created havoc with the lower order. His first ball dismissed Dean and his last accounted for Chris. He only bowled 28 legal deliveries and took five wickets on a helpful surface. Keiron scored his first run since June 2019 from the only ball he faced.
The total of 131 seemed slightly disappointing despite taking all but two balls of the 30 overs. It was difficult to judge what was a competitive target, not having played a 30 over match before. The lack of bounce possibly could get worse.
Brown left early to a ball that kept low, but the visitors reached 36 for two when the last ball of the twelfth over castled Mulvey. This was the start of a rout. In the next five overs, Keiron and Chris reduced Hartley Wintney to 44 for 7. The target was now 88 to win in 13 overs with only three wickets in hand. Parson, at number nine, farmed the strike very well so that the last three wickets added 33. Jono then bowled a maiden at him, exposing last man Darnell to the strike. Ben’s second ball bowled him and ended the game.
Jake and Chris had shared six wickets and Keiron’s niggardly spell had been excellent. The hundred percent record had been maintained against a team who, in a normal year, would be playing in the division above us.
