Hambledon v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 12.30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 4 runs

Match report On a very blustery day when bails and caps were blown off, P & S finally got the monkey off their backs and beat Hambledon. It was made all the more enjoyable by taking place at Ridge Meadow and that victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat.
Ben won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch which had more bounce than I’ve ever seen before. Jack and Matt did well to open with 74. Scoring opportunities were limited by the early bounce and right through the innings, many hard-hit shots brought only a single due to well placed fields. Off spinner Pearce dismissed both openers and soon four wickets had fallen for the addition of 28 runs.
Another substantial partnership was needed and that’s what we got with Chris and Alex putting on 88 in quick time. Alex dominated the strike and was not in the least bit overawed by the pressure of the situation. He also undermined the confidence of some of the fielders. Chris supported well at nearly a run a ball and made sure that the 200 was reached.
Hambledon’s reply was soon impaired by Jake’s removal of Pratt with just 5 on the board. However, Glanfield and Le Clerq added 67 to alleviate their poor start. Three wickets then fell for only 21 and the balance tipped towards the visitors. Bond and Marshall then eclipsed all previous partnerships with the addition of 100. With the scoreboard showing 193 for 4, Hambledon were only 12 short of victory.
Bond tried to sweep Keiron and top edged to slip. The opening bowlers came back for the last three overs. Two runs later Marshall lobbed the ball to square leg. Both new batsmen were on nought. Three runs were added before Pearce failed to beat Alex’s underarm roll from behind the stumps. Seven were now needed to win. Khan ran a single. Jono had Willoughby caught at 199. Jono to bowl and a six was needed. Only a single came and a very exciting and likely to be memorable match was over.
