Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Under 13A v Grayshott on Tue 02 Jul 2019 at 6pm
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 22 runs
Match report
A hyped up game against Surrey based Grayshott awaited us on a warm Tuesday night in Milton. Skipper Harrison lost the toss and we were put into field first.
New ball partnership of Tom and Ryan started well pitching the ball up and caused problems early on. A couple of early scalps meant that the game was set up nicely and we were well in it at the end of the first 6. Our spin twins of H and Curwood started strong keeping the runs down and threatening the all forms of dismissals. However a couple of misfields, slightly loose deliveries as well as some good shots meant that the after their spells Grayshott were slightly ahead of the game. Something fresh was in need and that change came in the form of Rob and Jacob. Rob was bowling with some decent wheels and his full length meant that their in batsmen looked uncomfortable as they were looking to attack on the back foot. Jacob then looked to make his difference by turning the ball away from the right handers and as if by magic, he made an impact almost straight away as the batsman spooned it straight to cover. In between all this some superb ground fielding from Ryan in at cover resulted in 2 run outs. This left Grayshott with one man left who batted very well and retired in a short period. Grayshotts innings was forced to end 2.2 overs early and had set 136 to win for the home side.
At the halfway stage we should've been more than positive than perhaps we were. If 2 men retired, on top of the inevitable extras, this would leave us with about 40 to get between 7. However, Tom got an very good ball early which had sent him back to the dressing room. In form Ryan walked out to join James. A couple of well timed whips off his hip looked to set Curwood up nicely however he was cleaned up when looking to push on. As the captain walked in, a big yet achievable job was on our hands. H looked to struggle to get the pace of the wicket early in his innings but the pressure was lifted off him as Nay went for the counter attacking option and hit the ball crisply. As this pair started to push on the required rate started to creep up to 10's. This pressure seemed a bit much as Ryan went for one big shot too many and a very good knock came to end. It was Fin's turn to try create a match-winning knock and immediately he upped the anti by running hard. However, this ended up being at the expense of Harrison who perished after going for a second which wasn't quite there. In came Rob who batted fearlessly crunching the ball through mid-wicket early in his innings for 4. But wickets continued to fall at regular intervals which prevented us from forming any sort of real partnerships. Ollie was the man in at 7 and looked to press in the same fashion that the situation required, unfortunately the ball wasn't quite there for him as he was caught at cover. It was Jacobs turn who was loving the situation because it allowed him to play with freedom, even quoting 'up the tailenders' whilst in the middle. But once again, as we looked to push the fielders Jacob was short of his ground meaning that Elliot came in as the last man. Fin ended the innings with a number of blistering boundaries and crunching shots, however we were sadly 22 runs short.
It's never easy with so many games back to back and we faced a strong opposition. We were competitive throughout and we look to go again against local rivals Pompey tonight!
