Match report
A solid performance from the U13Bs today against a tough opposition. Unfortunately it wasn't Tom R's day today, doing very little wrong the keeper took a catch from behind from the tiniest of edges. Talitha and Ollie hit well for a few overs and Ollie was caught on 14, still a respectable score. The runs were ticking along nicely, with us also picking up a lot of extras along the way. Felix replaced Ollie and was the star batsman of the day, he retired not out on 37, but not before a bit of undecisive running saw Talitha run out for 28. Elliott hit a 4 off his 2nd ball looking very confident but failed to respect a straight one on the next ball. Oscar also put in his best batting performance of his season so far, scoring 14 not out at the end of the innings. The last ball was probably the most bizarre one we will see all season, what should have been a single bye where the ball didn't leave the square resulted in Oscar and Henry F running 4 - yes 4, due to a number of fielding errors and the opposition failing to take the bails off.
We finished on our biggest total so far this season of 152, 55 of those were extras but still a very good score off the bat for a fairly young and inexperienced team. On another day it could have been a different story, there were several shots played up in the air from a few of our batsmen which were failed to be caught and with tighter fielding from the opposition we may have had some run outs also so, as good as it was, we still need to learn from today's batting performance.
The trouble was, we knew Locks Heath were a strong side, top of the table all season so far and beating us by 26 runs a few weeks back. However, the players went out feeling really positive after putting on a very good score, all the players were vocal throughout, listened well to each other and encouraged the bowlers and fielders the whole innings. The ball found the fielders easily most of the time and we also kept the extras down to just 17. There were some impressive stops from Olle P-F, Talitha, Elliott and Felix that should have been easy 4s from the batsman and Tom R more than made up for his lack of runs scored with a superb performance behind the stumps, giving away only 2 byes, particularly hard due to how much the ball was moving around.
Bowling-wise everybody did their bit with half the team giving away 4 or less runs an over. Experienced spinners Henry F and Harrison E (our last minute stand in) were turning the ball so much most of the balls were unplayable, and on an artificial pitch that is rarely the case, both were rewarded with wickets but deserved more. Talitha took 2 in a row with two no nonsense balls straight down the middle, but probably the strongest bowling performance was from Elliott, he bowled the opening and closing overs and in total his 3 overs went for only 8 runs, 4 of those off the 1st ball of the innings which he more than made up for on his 2nd ball which was so powerful the stumps split apart like tenpin bowling pins. His last over was a maiden, so, given that Locks Heath still had plenty of batsman waiting and were a long way behind so we thought perhaps they would be hitting big that over, they could do nothing but try to protect their wicket, which surprisingly they managed.
A great performance all round rewarded with 16 out of 18 points and putting them straight to the top of the league (for a few hours anyway). Two weeks off now for the Bs but 2 games in a row after that will hopefully keep P&S pushing those around the top of the table.
