Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI v Waterlooville III on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 13.00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 120 runs
Match report
A comprehensive third victory in a row for the development team saw P&S ease past Waterlooville III's at a balmy Langstone Harbour.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, a tidy start quickly became a concern as we slipped to 22/3, with the away side taking a couple of excellent catches. However, they also dropped a couple of easier ones, which would prove very costly.
Umar joined Harrison at the crease in the 5th over and settled things down as the two young guns started to build a much-needed partnership. The pair put on 75 together before Umar, getting frustrated at being bogged down, was stumped as he walked down the track looking to go over the top. After Mohit top-edged a catch for 5 we were 116/5 but still had Harrison there as he went past 50, playing some lovely lofted drives over mid-off in the process. Why do lefties look so much more elegant?
Pat came in and the two built another stand, batting sensibly but putting away the bad balls and keeping the score moving. With six overs to go the boys opened up, Harrison sealing a magnificent first century in the best fashion with a maximum over deep backward square. After Pat was bowled while selflessly taking the bowling on, Matt came in and added a quickfire 19 as the whites added 71 in the last 7 overs to take us to 222/6 and maximum batting points. Harrison finished with a superb 117 not out and sat down for a well-deserved rest, although he wasn't quite done yet...
The 'Ville openers were certainly not hanging around and at 38/0 off 7 we needed a breakthrough. Mo grabbed it for us, trapping the skipper LBW for 24. That brought Beadle to the crease which only accelerated the run rate. Harrison removed the other opener as Guy took a good catch on the run from mid-on and we started to feel they didn't have much batting to come. When Harrison removed Beadle's off stump the tide had turned and despite the opposition being 93/3 off just 15 overs, the lads smelt blood and went for the jugular.
A devastating spell of 5 wickets in 9 balls saw the 'Ville innings come to a shuddering halt as Harrison had Reynolds caught by the safe hands of dad Robert at slip before producing a peach that jagged back in at the new batsman to clip the top of middle. Ellis, the new man in, survived the hat-trick ball but it was to be the last time bat touched ball. Mani joined in the fun in the following over after a single brought Ellis to the striker's end. After taunting Mani earlier that "he doesn't even turn it", Mani promptly disproved that by bowling a beauty that turned and clipped the top of off stump, sending Ellis packing with a smug grin that didn't go down well with the departing batsman. The following ball found the edge and was caught behind by the diving keeper but again the opposition survived the hat-trick.
When Croft could only place a tame drive into the safe hands of Umar at mid-off, Harrison had 5 wickets to go along with his century on what will be a very memorable day for him. Mohit came on and wrapped things up and "Ville had gone from 93/2 to 102 all out in 5.5 overs.
A top performance all round and maximum points in the bag as we continue our resurgence, with a struggling Fareham to come next week.
MOM: It was the Whitworth show today and the most obvious MOM decision ever! Congratulations on a fantastic achievement.
