Follands II v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 18 May 2019 at 13.00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 57 runs

Match report Probably a game we should have won but lots of positives to be taken...

Follands won the toss and decided to bat. After they scored 250+ the week before, and with a lightning fast outfield, we knew we'd have to field well to stay in the game. Matt and Fais opened the bowling and with just his 7th delivery, Matt struck thanks to an incredible, nonchalent, one-handed catch by Rob at first slip. This brought the skiper to the crease and he looked settled from the off, stroking two boundaries in his first over. However, just as the home side seemed to be stepping on the gas, Matt took his second wicket of the day as he got some extra bounce to the other opener who could only glove to Lenny at short fine leg. Follands continued with a bold approach and the captain was playing well before he was bizzarely run out by some good work by Umar at mid on. With their skipper running to the striker's end, his bat stuck in the ground just short of the crease and he dropped it before making his ground. After some deliberation and with us pointing out that the bat was still lying on the ground short of the crease, the square leg umpire raised his finger to the skipper's surprise.
Reuben was in the middle of a tidy spell and took two wickets in the middle of the innings, before Umar took two key wickets. Firstly he removed the dangerous Booth before producing a jaffa to the top scorer who edged behind to Neil for 57. Matt was brought back on to clean up the tail, and boy did he! In his sixth over he accounted for Ball who top-edged to Lenny, who had to wait an age for it to come down but again made no mistake. The next ball was a beauty, a little bit of late swing straightening it up to give a plum LBW. The field came in with a host of slips and close fielders but they weren't needed as the No 11 could only play a meek backward defensive and the ball continued on to his stumps, giving Matt his first fifer and a hattrick at the same time. We had restricted the home side to 182 and felt it was definitely getable.

Similar to last week, we didn't get off to the best start as Rob fell to the 7th ball of the innings. Guy stuck around as he tried to feel his way into the game but when Umar went after a bright start for 9 followed by Steve for a duck, we were already up against it. Ollie and Neil steadied the ship and then started to take the game to Follands, and as we approached drinks we only needed 97 for victory. However a poor shot by the skipper in the 20th over, popping one up to cover on 33, just gave the home side a lift. Ollie batted nicely again for 28 but when he was LBW to their skipper's final delivery, the game was up. We lost our last 6 wickets for 39 with only two players making double figures, however Follands knew they had been in a game. It was a shame our batting did not quite match what was an excellent bowling and fielding display: we held our catches and made some excellent last-ditch stops on the rope, whilst bowling some good spells. If we continue to do these things well and find our form with the bat, our first win win will be immenent. Rowner on Saturday should give us plenty of incentive after some needle in last year's fixture.
MOM: Matt Wheeler - a top spell of bowling capped off in the best way. Great stuff
