Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI v Denmead on Sat 11 May 2019 at 13.00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Not the start we were hoping for, but with a host of players unavailable we fielded a very young side and came up against a far stronger Denmead team than the one we played in August.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Denmead made a key breakthrough in the 3rd over as Wheatley, swinging the ball away, got Davo to edge to the 'keeper. It was then a game of attrition as Dinesh and Neil tried to see off the opening bowlers until the captain was run out by a direct hit. Ollie provided some momentum in the middle of the innings with his best knock for a while, with Matt playing a big-hitting cameo at the end, but with only 3 players making double figures we were always going to be a bit short.

Matt opened the bowling and bowled a really good spell, finding the edge of numerous occasions but a combination of luck for the batsmen and a couple of drops, albeit tricky ones, behind the stumps meant he somehow finished wicketless. Fais found it trickier bowling in to the wind from the creek end but still picked up two. Lenny took a good catch at gully to remove the opener and when Bobby held another off Fais, we looked in the game. However, their skipper came out with only one intention and scored a quick-fire 17 to get them motoring, before two of our colts combined to remove him - Tom taking a super low catch on his birthday off Lenny's bowling at mid off. This proved to be our last wicket though, as despite finding the edge on numerous occasions, the batsmen continued to somehow find the gaps and get the away team home quite comfortably in the end.

A tricky first game against a side who will be there or there abouts based on that display but we kept going and on another day would have taken 6 or 7 wickets. We need to take this positive in to next week's away game at Follands, which looks to be another tricky one.
MOM: Tricky one but I'm going to give it to the birthday boy Tom - looked comfortable with the bat, took a great catch and then started his spell with the ball really well.
