Match report This might sound a bit odd but - what a performance!
Faced with a big Hambledon side containing 5 U11 SE RPC players and a number of younger ones, our side of U8's 9s and 10s (plus a couple of 11s and a ringer) winning wasn't likely.
However, our bowling and fielding was always committed. Everyone one of the boys worked hard and stayed focused. Bowling successes were seen for Henry who's flight was excellent and young Sam who cleaned up one of their star bats. Another champagne moment was Jacobs diving, left hand, stop and rocket throw that almost brought a late run out.
Despite our efforts though, three retirements meant we had a mountain to climb. Tom started as he left off at Havant and cracked the first ball for 4. Unfortunately a decent catch later in the over saw him heading back. They turned the screw for a while with excellent bowling rattling the stumps and causing pressure to bring run outs. However, with us better learning to be confident and positive - and running our bats in - we can reduce the likelihood of future run outs.
While all this was going on Henry started quietly before unleashing cuts, drives, flicks and pulls to the boundary. To reach a very much deserved retirement he need company and up stepped Sam. Toughing it out against the quickest they could throw at him he not only stayed in line but also managed a lovely late cut for 4. Once he had be bowled by their strike man (who ended with 4 wickets) and Henry had taken the applause to retire, the end came pretty quickly. Our ringer played one lovely square drive but had the top of his off stump trimmed to finish us off.
We were beaten by a very good side tonight - but the future is bright for our young guns. Well done all.
