Bashley Rydal II v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 56 runs
Match report
This was perhaps our second most complete performance of the year (after our win at Purbrook). Batting first Tom and Matt raised our seasons best opening partnership of 83. With low bounce a feature early on they were watchful initially against testing seam bowling. So well was Matt batting that it was against the run of play when his missed sweep to the left arm round spinner was adjudged LBW. By the time Tom's innings was ended with a drive to mid-off the pitch had settled somewhat. Nevertheless Jack and Jake's perfectly paced work wrested the initiative then expanded as the overs ticked by. As the last over began Jack need 11 for his 3rd century of the season and Jake 2 for his fifty. Two 4's and a couple left JD with one needed off the 4th ball. Soft hands to cover saw him raise his bat and left Jake with two balls to get to his own landmark. Unfortunately their partnership was ended at 148 off the last ball of the innings as Jake was bowled for 48.
Chris started where he finished last week with three early scalps, one thanks to "stunner" at first slip from Matt and was unlucky not have at least one more. With us well on top, the left handed Vaughan and experienced campaigner Pardey did just what Jack and Jake did for us. Their dangerous partnership of 109 was finally broken when Keiron first induced a leading edge from Pardey and then watched Chris take a cracker running back from mid-off over his shoulder. While they kept fighting we were improving favourites as Ben with the help of Jono and Rob (who had everyone calling for helmets) kept chipping away in the wickets column. We finally crossed the line taking maximum points, 50+ runs to the good and with an over to spare.
Now sat mathematically safe we look forward to our last match in comfort and hope to see the same sort of performance next week.
