Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI v Lymington II on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 14 runs

Match report Keiron won what turned out to be a very important toss and chose to bat first on a difficult pitch where the drought conditions helped all types of bowlers. The early batting was particularly circumspect. When Matt was caught behind in the eighth over, only three of the twelve runs scored were off the bat. Jake’s dismissal allowed Jack to join Ollie, but it wasn’t until the 29th over that the run rate reached two per over. Ollie was run out looking for an ambitious single at 72 (32 overs). The tempo increased as Jack and Shaun put on 51 in eleven overs. Jack had reached his fifty from 56 balls and shown good judgment in his return to form. His dismissal to a superb catch at 151 instigated a collapse. Four wickets fell while 8 runs were added. With only eight balls remaing, Ben and Chris added eight further runs.
Was this a defendable total ? This was the question on most minds during the tea interval. Jake’s early wicket in the second over was a boost, but also heralded the advent of the visitors’ potential match winner, Tom Barton. With Cox giving solid, if dour, support at the other end, Barton was soon into his stride with Jake and Ben taking the brunt of the assault. Lymington had reached 90 in the twentieth over when Ben went round the wicket. Also immediately, he bowled Barton, as he had at Lymington and P & S were back in the contest. In the next six overs, Keiron and Jono reduced the visitors to 102 for six and a home win, so long in coming, looked the most likely outcome.
However, the adhesive Cox, with Attrill, added 27 in 11 overs before Chris took the first of two wickets in five deliveries to make the score 132 for eight. Smith followed five runs later and the game looked up, but Attrill and Willis thought differently. Their partnership of 16 took Lymington too close for comfort and Keiron’s catch brought as much relief as pleasure.
The news that Havant II and Fawley had also lost was tempered by the fact that Gosport had beaten Fawley by four runs, but all in all, it was a good day for P & S. The monkey is off their back !
