Purbrook v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 175 runs
Match report
The visitors bounced back from last week’s disappointing loss to Hambledon with an outstanding performance where more players contributed than in any previous match this season.
Purbrook were the authors of their on downfall to some extent. When Jack was second out to a brute of ball at 49 for two, only 25 runs had come off the bat in 9 overs. Ollie, playing the anchor role, and Matt then added 75 from 16 overs. Ollie and Tom then compiled a partnership of 100 for the fourth wicket in just 20 overs. After Ollie was fifth out, 28 more came from the last three overs. Leg spinner Cox had caused Tom and Ollie problems with prodigious turn, but the latter made his highest Southern League score and made lots of extra runs for his teammates with his roadrunner impersonation.
Purbrook got off to the worst possible start. Holder edged an outswinger fourth ball of the innings and Harding went a run later. Figgins and Lee soon followed to make the score 20 for four after 11 overs. Jake and Chris both bowled their full quotas at which point Purbrook had slightly recovered to 42 for 4, but needing 223 from 30 overs. Ben then dismissed Mengham and Cox with successive deliveries with the total still on 42. McCoy and Young added 24 before the latter was run out. McCoy and Dean showed some defiance but the game ended just before six o’clock with Ben recording 4 for 22.
This was a fine effort by the bowlers who all found help from the pitch, but not so much from the fielders who missed half a dozen chances. Only six wides were conceded in 32 overs.
It was a huge relief to watch Matt return to the form we know he can produce.
