Lymington II v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 26 May 2018 at 12:30
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Won by 37 runs
Match report
Without a win or even a batting point this season, P & S suffered a further setback when Jack’s right index finger suffered a dislocation during fielding practice prior to the match. He opened the innings as usual and had to watch as a procession of partners departed. Tom joined him in the fifteenth over with defeat looming and the score 59 for 4. Together they added 104 in 28 overs, with Tom playing the anchor role and Jack doing most of the scoring. When Tom’s vigil ended with only seven overs to go, the visitors knew they would bat for all 50 overs. Jack carried his bat while scoring 61% of the total and gave his side a chance of recording their first victory of the season.
Lymington had a far better start with 52 for the first wicket in 17 overs. Ben broke the partnership and then Jake sent Adams back with no runs added. Big hitter Barton played four dot balls and then launched a violent assault on Ben and Jake, scoring 40 from nine deliveries. Ben then went round the wicket and the scoring rate dropped. Jake, having bowled nine overs for just 14, did not enjoy his final over. Keiron took over from him and dismissed Agha at 102. Barton followed 13 runs later, his last ten runs taking 12 balls. Calcott and Royan then added 44 in 14 overs and were winning the game before Calcott holedout to extra cover. Royan ran himself out at 161 with 10 overs left. Moors slogged a quick ten until he was well caught at long on at 174. Sutherland and Layman took the total on to 185. Thirty-eight were needed from 42 balls. Jon bowled three dot balls to Layman. From the fourth he was brilliantly caught by Jake at deep mid-wicket. On the fifth ball, Sutherland ran Woodward out. Bowring was leg before first ball.
The drought was over. It was a memorable day for Jack who played the innings of his life.
