Waterlooville III v Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 26 May 2018 at 13:00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report One to forget, this game.

Having lost the toss on a dubious looking wicket, we were put into bat. With both of our openers from last week missing, Guy stepped up to take on the role. He looked comfortable enough until an ill-advised second was taken to the fielder at third man, leaving him some way short. Ollie played a lovely clip off his pads for four before mis-timing a drive to cover, bringing the skipper to the crease. Whilst 5 overs passed with minimal threat, the scoreboard had ground to a halt as we sacrificed runs for maintaining wickets. This changed in a devastating over when Neil slashed at a wide delivery, the diving catch held in the covers. The Lords-esque slope was causing all sorts of problems, but the nagging line outside off stump was a credit to the 'ville bowlers. Lenny departed first ball, late cutting one to gully, before Matt misjudged a pull shot the very next ball, bottom-edging it on to the stumps to complete the hat-trick and send the hosts wild. Mo came in to join his brother, only to be on his way on the last ball of the over, done by a top nut as Ellis got one to nip away off the slope and clip the top off off stump. We had lost 4 for 0 in 5 balls and it looked like being embarrassing, but some improved batting by the tail saw Chis (despite being hit in the jaw by a very high full toss), Mani and Josh all reach double figures. Umar had batted sensibly under difficult circumstances and we managed to claw our way to 60 when Faisal was the last man to fall.
New man Faisal opened the bowling and immediately found a good line and length. At the other end, Mo made a break through as we showed some character and fight in difficult circumstances. The other opener was not holding back and seemed keen to get our opponents over the line asap, but was bowled by Matt who produced a peach that cut him in half before crashing into middle. Ultimately we did not have enough runs to play with, and the 'ville skipper guided his side home comfortably as a boundary down the hill passed the required total.
Unfortunately we were not good enough on the day, but we came up against a good side who were on it in the field and know how to play the sloping pitch. However the lads kept going to the end which is a great attribute to have in future games that will be far closer than this one, and we see this as experience rather than defeat.
MOM Josh Poole for some cracking shots at no 11
