Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club 4th XI v Old Netley & Highfield III on Sat 19 May 2018 at 13:00
Portsmouth & Southsea Cricket Club Lost By 2 wkts

Match report So nearly an opening win but in the final analysis our having to take the field with 10 players and their having a 1st teamer bat at 3 and bat through did for us.
Winning the toss young skipper Mani opted to bat. Jez began watchfully and built well but we sadly lost Jason before the experienced man could settle. Stephen was soon dispatching the ball to all parts but perished looking for a pull off a ball a bit too full. With Jez continuing with little fuss Umar looked to have a future at 4 until their experienced offie beat his defences. On his debut Matt took the game by the scruff of the next and cracked 3 quick boundaries. Unfortunately his eyes lit up so much at a big full toss - that it blinded him and he missed it to be bowled! Sonny and Mani will both have better days with the bat as they then Josh, who was looking good until he was beaten, went pretty quickly. Enter Lenny who kept Jez company to his well deserved maiden half century. Having batted with real maturity, taking on the right shot at the right time it was great to watch. Lenny all the while clipped and scampered his way on until he fell trying to go over the top. That brought our senior pro to the crease who was happy to watch Jez open his shoulders and get us to a defendable score.
Matt opened things up with ball and caused problems immediately beating the bat regularly while at the other end Stephen did likewise. It didn't pay dividends immediately but when the breakthrough came it was a cracking swinging yorker from Matt that beat their captain. Mani was next in the wickets as their other opener hacked at a spinning ball and watched as Sonny took a tumbling catch over his shoulder. By this time though their number 3 was bedding in and was clearly the key to the match. Once he'd found his range Josh was causing the odd flutter but had no luck. Lenny though produced a ball, almost as good as Matt's first wicket. This one pitched middle and hit the top of off to see off their experienced number 4. His second wicket came thanks to a good snaffle at gully from Josh. Umar showed the second string to his bow by bowling the number 6 and Mani tempted the 7 to crack a ball at Matt in midwicket.
All the while number 3 was edging them closer. Our cause was certainly not helped by a scoring mix up that had Steve bowled out, when we knew he had an over left (but without a scorer we have no complaints). That left Matt to drive our final push. A caught and bowled made things interesting and a second wicket in the over made it really interesting. Sadly that was our last success and they got over the line with 9 balls to spare.
Despite the result, it was an encouraging day. Our congratulations particularly to Mani on his first captaincy, to Matt on his 3 wicket debut, to Sonny on a great display taking the gloves for the first time since U13 level and of course to Jez for his top innings.
